Welcome to the Middle School
Dear Friends,
"Joy in teaching, Joy in learning"
Cornelia Connelly, Founder
It is hard to believe that Cornelia Conelly envisioned a legacy that would still have meaning today. While the "joy' is integral to the Middle School curriculum, perhaps the most important part of the statement the phrase "in learning" articulates the philosophy that learning is a process, rather than a goal in itself; it is not finite. Learning is a life-long skill and it is in school where it develops and gains momentum.
A healthy and joyful environment, with an emphasis on the process of learning is the foundation upon which Holy Child's Middle School program is built. Girls "learn to learn" in all subjects, are taught how to organize themselves, their materials, and their assignments. They learn content, but more importantly, they are taught myriad of ways to discover and access information.
Girls acquire the tools for learning through a curriculum that is integrated, inter-disciplinary, technological, global, and thematic: Through the inter-disciplinary and thematic curriculum students learn to make connections, think broadly, not linearlly, and examine content in context. The themes that are chosen each year develop awareness of people, places, and phenomena--such as "Go Green," "Global Villages," and "One Piece of the Puzzle"--and are vital to the whole five through eight Middle School experience.
Fields trips, retreats, orientation events, visits to sister schools, community service, assemblies, student leadership opportunities, an advising program, lap-top learning, and an emphasis on both the arts and athletics, all support and enrich the Middle School years.
I hope that as you explore this site, as well as come to campus for a visit, you will see for yourself the open and warm campus, as well as the nurturing learning environment that defines Holy Child.
Sincerely,
Julie Crane
